Kid's day out at Pacific Place

Today, M and I took the kids to see the new Christmas movie, 'Rise of the Guardians'.

After, Prince PTT added himself to the Lane Crawford window display much to the amusement of Princess PTT and his friends.

Quirky Lane Crawford Christmas window displays...

Pacific Place always does something pretty spectacular for their Christmas display. This year, its a gorgeous wintry ballerina theme. Here's where Santa will be appearing...

You get to sit on the lounge with the big guy himself...

Of course, Hong Kong can't put up a shopping centre display without some subtle reminders...

Causeway Bay Christmas 2012

I went to Causeway Bay today to start getting some Christmas gift ideas.

Franc Franc (Japanese mini department store) was offering its usual 'more is more' display.

I was quite taken by these little chaps but had to resist as PTT's Hong Kong Headquarters has officially run out of surfaces.

The Times Square Shopping Mall has a massive life size lego display. As i've said before, you wouldn't know there is a recession going on with what Hong Kong drags out for the festive season! I must take Prince and Princess PTT back for a look.

Hong Kong adults love to photograph each other with cutesy things. Often, Prince and Princess PTT have to wait their turn for a line of adults to strike a pose. I normally give up at Disney. There was a pushy shovey line of about 10 adults behind this woman. I often wonder what they do with the photos later?

I've got the humidifiers out. The PTT HK Headquarters feels like living in a greenhouse at the moment.

Ballerina Princess PTT

I went to Princess PTT's Ballet open class this afternoon. One word... adorable! She's been doing it for a year now. I love their old school kitchen curtain skirts, don't you?

School Christmas Fairs

Most of the Hong Kong schools host their annual fairs between now and Christmas. Prince PTT's School's 'International Bazaar' was Friday night.

They always have an 'injury booth' which I find quite macabre. Naturally its popular with the kids! Here's Prince PTT and his BFF showing off their injured arms.

In other news, Princess PTT has discovered the joys of cotton candy. She lined up on her own for 30 minutes to get a whip of sugar bigger than her head and devoured every morsel.

Here she is with her BFF...

On Saturday we went to the City Kids Christmas Fair. They push the boat our with excellent cheap activities for the kids. Here's Prince and Princess PTT blinging up some baubles for the Grandparents' Christmas stockings...

My friend M ran the cookie decorating stall. Naturally, Princess PTT went for bulk sprinkles...

Whereas Prince PTT went for artistic perfection. Says something about their personality doesn't it?

Princess PTT went all Martha Stewart and created this gorgeous bracelet for me...

I might start flinging some Christmas things around the flat this week. My Poinsettias are getting lonely.

Jamia Mosque

I picked up Prince PTT and N's Daughter, H, from their drama rehearsal and on the walk home the Jamia Mosque up the escalator was having an open day. After living here for five years, I've never seen it open to the public, so we took a quick look. The kids' open minded inclusive schooling paid off as they marched straight to the front and started to prostrate 'Muslim' style, much to the amusement of the Mosque officials!

I loved the stained glass in the dome.

It's gorgeous to see something so old and stately in Hong Kong. Jamia Mosque was built in 1849. Normally, they don't respect old buildings here and pull gorgeous renovation projects down to make way for yet another crappy high rise that will start to crack in five years time.

Also loved the other character filled on the site...

Wah Kee Seafood Restaurant, Lantau Island

C and I, our assorted Mr's and the kids ventured to Lantau Island today by way of the Mui Wo ferry to try Wah Kee Seafood restaurant. Personally, I think that Hong Kong's outer island seafood restaurants do the best Chinese food in Hong Kong. Maybe it's because we are eating outside? Maybe it's the seafood influenced menu? Whatever the reason, the food to me tastes most like 'Australian Chinese'.

Here's the obligatory cheers shot...

We started with fried rice which had shredded lettuce through it. I've never seen that before and it was actually very nice.

We then moved onto scallops with broccoli... Unfortunately they didn't have my favourite dish of scallops in their shell on a bed of garlicky glass vermicelli. This was OK but not what I was craving...

The dry fried chilli crab went so fast that I only got 1/2 a photo!...

The calamari with spiced salt was a hit with the junior PTT brigade...

This was my personal favourite - sweet and sour prawns with pineapple. Now, before you roll your eyes and have visions of 'lets play find the prawn in the batter whilst it swims around red food colouring goop', let me tell you that this was a testament to how this dish should be cooked. The prawns were coated in a batter so light that you were left wondering if there were any there at all. The sauce had a perfectly balanced sweet and sour tang and the capsicum and onion were crunchy. The only thing letting the dish down was the fact that they used tinned pineapple - but in a way it added to the dish's retro-tastic decadence.

Our after lunch entertainment was watching this boat try and drag up half the sea creatures from the bottom of the South China Sea in its massive net. I guess our lunch was swimming on Saturday morning.

The aftermath....

After lunch, we went for a digestif walk along the lovely bayside boulevard....

All in all a fantastic Sunday! If you are in Hong Kong, you should try it sometime!

Din Tai Fung

Din Tai Fung has made it onto the Hong Kong bucket list as our fave Dim Sum restaurant.

Today, M, N, C and I, our assorted Mr's and all the kids ventured to the Causeway Bay branch for a crazy 90 minute dim sum fest. It's amazing how many vegetables children will eat when they are wrapped in little parcels and come in attractive baskets...

Here are the PTT kids and friends watching the magic happen whilst we are waiting for our table...

For all of my Sydney readers, there is apparently a Din Tai Fung branch there now so please check it out and report back on what you think!

School Holidays - Hong Kong Style

We had a couple of days in Hong Kong before school went back and I took Prince and Princess PTT out shopping for the day. On the way down from mid-levels we just had to detour down Pottinger Street aka "dress up street" for a quick browse and to get inspiration for future parties...

Then we went to IFC shopping mall. Strangely but amazingly, their central display for this month is of Lyuba - a preserved 40,000 year old baby wooly mammoth. Prince and Princess PTT were fascinated and I loved the fact that we could combine a unique and exciting museum visit with my yoghurt and lamb chop purchases...

 Only in Hong Kong, right?
